He’s Using Heroin
What would you do if you found out a loved one was using heroin? This is a question we don’t even want to think about due to the consequences it can mean to the family, finances, trust and the long-term problems this can create.
I know of 1,000s of families who have had their lives turned upside down due to one member becoming involved in IV drug use. Whether you know exactly how to deal effectively with another’s addiction, addiction has a way of becoming a community problem.
Recovery Strategy For Families Facing Addiction
First, a family must learn how to properly intervene between an addicted person and their obsessive or compulsive drug abuse. This is covered very well on our Families Facing Addiction Survival Guide membership. Listen to the audio on intervention and keep good notes. Your future happiness depends on it.
Second, decide as a family what actions you’re going to take to deal with this person’s addiction. As it will be affecting you personally, you will have to take some actions to either help get the heroin user to an effective detox and rehab program or significantly distance yourselves. Warning: addicts find ways to pull you back in to their disasters.
Third, opiate users generally fear drug withdrawals as detoxing can be very uncomfortable. Factually, every heroin abuser has tried to stop using the china white or black tar powder before. They will start kicking after about a day if they don’t re-use. The withdrawals usually last 3 to 7 days and can last longer. Providing a better solution to their cramping and dry heaves means offering them a drug-free detox.
Fourth, opiate / heroin substitutes are fine to use if needed for a couple of days. However, drugs like methadone, suboxone, etc are being used as replacement drugs and doctors or clinics keep people on those for years, decades or life. Switching addictions from one drug to another isn’t detox or rehab, it’s changing dealers. It’s better and faster to find an effective drug-free detox from heroin.
